Delicious Homemade Meat Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Pastry:

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 200g cold butter, cubed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ cup (60ml) cold water

For the Filling:

  • ¾ pound (350g) ground beef
  • 1 potato, peeled and diced into small cubes
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup (240ml) water or beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 egg (for brushing)

Instructions:

Prepare the Pastry:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add cubed butter and rub it into the flour until it forms a crumbly texture.
  3. Beat 2 eggs with cold water, then add to the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Make the Filling:

  1. In a large pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and sauté for 5-6 minutes until soft.
  2. Stir in diced carrots and potatoes, cooking for another 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook for 4-5 minutes until browned.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, thyme, and stir in flour for thickness. Add water or beef broth and cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assemble the Meat Pies:

  1. Divide the dough into 4 pieces and roll each out to ⅛-inch thickness. Cut into desired round shapes.
  2. Place 1-2 tablespoons of the meat filling in the center of each round. Fold the dough over and seal by pressing with your fingers or a fork.
  3. Poke the top with a fork to create steam vents.

Bake:

  1. Brush the pies with a beaten egg for a golden crust.
  2. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Let cool slightly before serving.
